England Hints at Ben Stokes International Cricket Return

LONDON: (Sports Desk) – England men’s cricket managing director Rob Key has hinted that former Test captain Ben Stokes could make a dramatic return to international cricket despite announcing his retirement earlier this year.

Speaking after the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed Stephen Fleming as the new Test head coach, Key said he would not rule out a comeback from the experienced all-rounder.

Stokes shocked the cricket world in late June when he announced his retirement from international cricket during the third Test against New Zealand. England went on to lose that match, with New Zealand winning the series 2-1.

The Durham all-rounder had also been dropped for the second Test after an off-field disciplinary issue, adding to a difficult period for the England team. Shortly afterwards, coach Brendon McCullum was removed from his red-ball coaching role, ending the highly aggressive “Bazball” era that he had led alongside Stokes.

With England preparing for a home Ashes series against Australia in 2027, Key said a Stokes return would be a remarkable storyline.

Asked whether Fleming had discussed the possibility of bringing Stokes back, Key said it had not yet been discussed but added that such a return would be “a great story.”

Key said Stokes had not indicated any change of mind but added that “anything’s possible with Ben,” while stressing that no relationship had been damaged.

Meanwhile, Stephen Fleming will not join England before September and will miss the upcoming three-match Test series against Pakistan starting in August. Key, however, dismissed concerns over Fleming’s delayed arrival, saying the priority was appointing the best candidate for the role.
