Electricity Tariffs to Decrease Soon: Government Completes IPPs Review, Promising Relief
Islamabad-Federal Minister for Power Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari has announced that relief in electricity tariffs is expected in the coming weeks, following the government’s review of Independent Power Producers (IPPs) and state-owned power plants.
During a meeting with the Senate Standing Committee on Power, Leghari shared that all necessary information regarding the IPPs has been gathered and promised to deliver positive news to the public shortly.
This announcement comes at a time when the coalition government led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is facing criticism over soaring electricity tariffs, which are adding to the financial strain on consumers already dealing with inflation.
To address concerns about the IPPs, the government is in the process of renegotiating contracts to tackle the “unsustainable” electricity prices that rank among the highest in the region.
Moreover, the Power Division recently revealed a relief measure that will reduce electricity bills by up to Rs2.65 for September due to fuel adjustments. Consumers using up to 300 units will see a decrease of Rs2.19 per unit, in conjunction with other relief measures.
Leghari elaborated that the task force conducted a detailed assessment of the return on equity, operation and maintenance costs, and outstanding dues related to the IPPs. He assured the Senate committee that all work was conducted with the confidence of the IPPs.

Senator Mohsin Aziz, the committee chair, stressed the importance of taking immediate action against electricity theft and over-billing. He also sought clarification on the tariff structures for bagasse-based Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
