Electricity Rates: Increases and Decreases Hit Consumers Simultaneously

Consumers Will Enjoy Short-Term Relief Before Facing Increased Costs in Upcoming Months

Pakistan-Electricity consumers nationwide are experiencing a blend of news as the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) announces changes to electricity tariffs.

While there is some relief with a minor decrease in monthly fuel adjustment charges, a significant increase has been approved under the quarterly adjustment framework.

NEPRA has approved a reduction of 37 paisas per unit in electricity rates for September as part of the monthly fuel adjustment. This decrease is expected to offer some financial relief on upcoming electricity bills.

However, NEPRA has also sanctioned a substantial increase of Rs1.75 per unit under the quarterly adjustment for the fourth quarter of the financial year 2023-24. This quarterly adjustment will lead to higher electricity costs, with the additional charges appearing on bills for September, October, and November.

The quarterly adjustment decision has been sent to the federal government for implementation. Consequently, while consumers might benefit from the reduction in their September bills due to the fuel adjustment, they will face a notable increase in overall electricity costs due to the quarterly adjustment.
