Election Commission Grants PTI Extension for Intra-Party Election Records

The Election Commission of Pakistan has granted the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) additional time to provide documentation in their intra-party election case. The commission has postponed the hearing until October 2.

During the proceedings, PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan requested a 10-day extension to submit the required records. A commission member noted it was positive that he expressed intentions to comply, saying, “It is good that you said God willing you will submit the record.”

When questioned about where the intra-party elections took place, Gohar stated that elections were held in all four provinces as well as in Islamabad. A commission member from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa cautioned Gohar that if the PTI’s intra-party elections were not recognized, the party could face a five-year ban under the Elections Act.

The member further inquired about the potential actions the commission could take if the PTI failed to conduct its intra-party elections. Gohar responded that they were ready to fully cooperate with the commission on this issue.

After the hearing, Gohar spoke to the media, asserting that the PTI had conducted exemplary intra-party elections across all provinces and Islamabad, during which they elected a chairman, a secretary general, and four presidents. He emphasized that no objections had been raised regarding the intra-party elections.

Gohar mentioned that while the election commission had posed constitutional and legal questions in its correspondence, it did not express any objections. He also pointed out that in the case concerning reserved seats, the commission itself submitted the relevant documents, arguing that its remarks regarding the PTI’s structure were incorrect. “We submitted our response to the election commission’s inquiries in the Supreme Court,” he added.
