ECP unveils nomination paper stats for 2024 General Elections

ECP approved 22,711 nomination papers for NA and provincial assembly general seats.

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) disclosed comprehensive data regarding the filing and acceptance, rejection of nomination papers for the upcoming 2024 general elections. According to the ECP, a total of 6,449 candidates received approval for National Assembly (NA) seats, comprising 6,094 men and 355 women, across Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and the Islamabad Capital Territory.

The returning officers (ROs) rejected the nomination papers of 1,024 candidates (934 men and 90 women) for NA seats out of a total of 7,473 applicants, including 445 women, for this assembly.

Furthermore, ROs approved 16,262 nomination papers for the four provincial assemblies from a pool of 18,478 candidates (17,670 men and 808 women). Nomination papers of 2,216 candidates (2,081 men and 135 women) were not accepted for provincial assemblies.

In total, the ECP approved 22,711 nomination papers for NA and provincial assembly general seats, with 21,684 being men and 1,027 women, out of a total of 25,951 submitted papers. During the scrutiny period that spanned five days starting from December 25, significant political figures, including Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), faced rejections, while leaders from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), such as Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz, Shehbaz Sharif, and Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, successfully secured ECP approval for their nomination papers.

For those whose nomination papers were rejected, there is a window for appeals until January 3. The ECP’s Appellate Tribunal will decide on the appeals by January 10, with the revised list of candidates set for publication on January 11.
