ECP decides not to contest RO’s cases amid allegations of rigging in courts

During proceedings, the Election Commission’s legal representative emphasized their role solely as facilitators to the court.
Peshawar: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has chosen to abstain from battling the cases involving Returning Officers (ROs) accused of rigging during the February 8 elections. This development comes amidst heightened scrutiny and petitions filed against election outcomes, particularly in Karim District, as heard by the Election Tribunal at Peshawar High Court.
During proceedings, the Election Commission’s legal representative emphasized their role solely as facilitators to the court, adhering to clear directives against entanglement in disputes. Notably, ROs are directed to independently navigate their legal battles.
The inquiry led Justice Waqar Ahmed to seek clarification on the status of ROs, prompting a written instruction affirming their non-affiliation with the Election Commission.

Responding to concerns, the petitioner’s counsel clarified that grievances were directed solely towards ROs and Deputy ROs, absolving the Election Commission of any direct complaints.
With the court calling for a response within seven days, the hearing of the case stands postponed, marking a significant turn in the ongoing electoral integrity discourse.
