Dr. Yasmin Rashid – A Beacon of Service and Strength

Dr. Yasmin Rashid is not merely a politician she is a living symbol of public service, compassion, and resilience. From an accomplished gynecologist to serving as Punjab’s Minister for Health, her journey has been marked by tireless dedication, professional integrity, and a deep commitment to humanity.

A Blend of Knowledge and Experience

Dr. Yasmin Rashid earned her MBBS in 1978 from Fatima Jinnah Medical College, Lahore. She later pursued postgraduate qualifications from the UK, including MRCOG in 1989 and FRCOG in 1999 from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. Upon her return to Pakistan, she held leadership positions in institutions like King Edward Medical University, where her mentorship impacted thousands of young medical students, particularly women, strengthening academic standards in the field of obstetrics and gynecology.

Transforming Public Health

During her tenure as Punjab’s Minister for Health (August 2018 – January 2023), Dr. Yasmin Rashid played a critical role in the fight against COVID-19. Under her guidance, a 1,000-bed field hospital was rapidly established. She expanded biosafety laboratory infrastructure and introduced typhoid vaccination into public immunization programs. Her policies were lauded by the World Health Organization, a testament to her ability to respond to health crises with clarity, speed, and vision. She seamlessly blended scientific progress with human-centric governance.

Empowering Women and Serving Society

Beyond healthcare, Dr. Rashid has been a staunch advocate for women’s rights and community well-being. She championed initiatives such as Punjab’s Safe Motherhood program and campaigns against thalassemia. Through the Community Action Process, she raised awareness about public health in marginalized communities. Her inclusive approach helped cultivate a more health-conscious and informed society.

Perseverance in the Face of Adversity

Public service is rarely without sacrifice. In May 2023, Dr. Yasmin Rashid was arrested and remains in custody. Despite her deteriorating health and ongoing battle with cancer, her spirit has not wavered. Multiple court orders to shift her to a hospital were often delayed, but her resilience remains unshaken. Her journey reminds us that true service often demands personal hardship and she has fulfilled that commitment with grace and courage.

A Leader Beyond Office

Dr. Yasmin Rashid’s life exemplifies leadership beyond political power. Her timely interventions, lifelong dedication to medicine, and undying passion for community upliftment offer lessons for all of us. If such leaders are given space in our political and social systems, Pakistan will surely move toward a stronger, more compassionate future.

Her sacrifices and legacy urge us to reflect: public service does not end at the boundaries of office it begins with a vow to humanity. Dr. Yasmin Rashid made that vow, and she continues to uphold it, even from behind bars.

The state must ask itself will history remember our treatment of a healer and a mother with pride, or regret? Justice is not only a matter of law—it is a moral obligation.
