Dengue Cases Continue to Rise Across Punjab

Severe cases can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, which can be life-threatening if not treated in time.

ISLAMABAD: Dengue cases are increasing across Punjab, with several new patients reported in the past 24 hours. According to the Punjab Health Department, 61 confirmed dengue cases have been recorded across the province within a single day. The total number of confirmed dengue patients in Punjab has now climbed to 1,618.

In Lahore, 15 new dengue cases were reported in the last 24 hours, bringing the city’s total number of confirmed patients to 290. Meanwhile, Rawalpindi recorded 29 new cases, pushing its total tally to 756.

Dengue is a viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV), which spreads through the bite of infected Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These mosquitoes usually bite during the day.

Common symptoms include high fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint and muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, skin rash, and mild bleeding (like nose or gum bleeding). Severe cases can lead to dengue hemorrhagic fever or dengue shock syndrome, which can be life-threatening if not treated in time.

These outbreaks occur almost every year, especially during and after the monsoon season (July to October), when stagnant water allows mosquitoes to breed. Major cities like Lahore, Karachi, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Peshawar often report hundreds of cases daily during peak season.

Officials have urged citizens to take preventive measures, including removing standing water and using mosquito repellents, to help control the spread of the virus.
