Deadly Winter Storm Leaves Millions Facing Extreme Cold in US
Arctic Winter Storm Kills 30 Disrupts US Power Transportation
WASHINGTON: (Web Desk) – A powerful winter storm has left at least 30 people dead across the United States, as perilously cold Arctic temperatures threaten millions more. The storm brought a mix of heavy snow, freezing rain, and sleet, leaving transportation paralyzed and causing widespread power outages, particularly in southern states unaccustomed to extreme winter weather.
As of Monday evening, over 600,000 customers remained without electricity, while authorities worked to provide emergency warming shelters for affected residents. Temperatures in the Great Lakes region plummeted as low as -23°F (-30.6°C) with dangerous wind chills capable of causing frostbite within minutes, while southern states from Texas to Louisiana faced record cold for the season.

Officials warned that recovery efforts could be slowed by the frigid Arctic air, and at least 20 states plus Washington, D.C., had declared states of emergency to mobilize resources. The storm is linked to a stretched polar vortex, sending extreme cold across much of North America, highlighting both the challenges of winter preparedness and ongoing concerns over climate-related weather disruptions.
