Cristiano Ronaldo Retires From Portuguese National Team After 23 Years
The 41-year-old captain says he will hand back the number 7 shirt after the November international break, ending a record-breaking international journey.
Cristiano Ronaldo – (Special Correspondent/Web Desk) – Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from the Portuguese national team. The news came on Thursday and closes one of the greatest international careers football has ever seen.
The 41-year-old said he will hand back the number 7 shirt once the November international break is over.
Ronaldo shared the news in a video. He said the choice was hard because some decisions come from the heart, not just the head.
He also thanked fans for the joy he gave them. If one of his goals made you hug a stranger, forget a worry or feel proud of Portugal, he said, it was all worth it.
Under his captaincy, Portugal won their first major trophy at Euro 2016. He also helped the team lift the Nations League in 2019 and 2025.
Ronaldo has played 234 times for his country and scored 146 goals. Both numbers are world records.
His last big tournament was the 2026 World Cup. Portugal went out in the last 16, losing 1-0 to Spain, who went on to win the title.
Even so, Ronaldo joined Lionel Messi as the only players to appear at six global tournaments.
The past few weeks were not smooth. In September, Ronaldo left camp without permission before a Nations League game against Denmark. He blamed broken promises from coach Jorge Jesus, who denied any such deal.
Ronaldo later apologised and said he was still available. The federation gave him a 30-day suspension and a small fine.
Portugal lead their Nations League group. They host Denmark in Braga on November 14, then visit Wales. These are his last two chances to add to his numbers.
The Portuguese Football Federation thanked him for his service. It called him a leader, an example of hard work and the soul of the team.
Ronaldo ended his message with humble words. He said his proudest moment was earning the honour of representing his country.
