Joe Root, Ollie Pope survived several close calls to see England through to close

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett shared a 166-run opening partnership to lead England’s fightback on day two of the fourth Test at Old Trafford. England closed on 225-2, trailing India by 133 runs.

Rishabh Pant earlier hit a valiant half-century despite injury, steering India to 358, with Ben Stokes taking his first five-wicket haul in eight years.

Crawley and Duckett scored quickly but narrowly missed out on centuries, falling for 84 and 94 respectively in the evening session.

Joe Root and Ollie Pope survived several close calls to see England through to the close, putting the hosts in with a chance of sealing victory in the five-match series with one test to spare.
