GB News Desk: Committee Formed to Address Issues of Dassu Hydropower Project Affected People. Gilgit-Baltistan: Under the chairmanship of the Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Haji Gulbar Khan, a committee meeting was held to address the issues faced by the affected people of the Dassu Hydropower Project.
The meeting, attended by provincial ministers, commissioners, project directors, and representatives of the affected communities, focused on finding solutions to the challenges encountered by the residents impacted by the project.
Chief Minister Haji Gulbar Khan emphasized the importance of the Dassu Hydropower Project and the need to address the issues faced by the affected population promptly. He highlighted the sacrifices made by the people of Diamer, who have generously contributed their lands at minimal rates for the project’s development.
The meeting concluded with an agreement to establish comprehensive agreements between the affected people and the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) to resolve compensation issues. It was decided that the rates of compensation for lands acquired for the project would be determined in accordance with the schedule rates of the Public Works Department for the years 2022-23.
Furthermore, it was agreed that the rights of the affected people, including resettlement packages and employment opportunities, would be ensured, similar to those provided to other affected communities of the Dassu Hydropower Project.
WAPDA would finalize compensation payments
Under the new Section Four regulations, it was noted that after the lapse of one year, the WAPDA would finalize compensation payments based on the agreed-upon rates for lands acquired in Diamer and Tangir.
Additionally, it was decided that WAPDA would undertake the upgradation of hospitals in Diamer and Tangir, providing cooperation for specialist doctors and nurses. The provision of incentives for students under education initiatives and cooperation in transportation services were also agreed upon.
Moreover, collaboration between WAPDA and the local government was announced for the construction of two new model schools in Gyal and Loroq, the establishment of 30-bed hospitals in Gyal and Loroq, and the establishment of a polytechnic college in Chilas.
The formation of this committee and the decisions made during the meeting mark a significant step towards addressing the concerns of the affected communities and ensuring their well-being in the development process of the Dassu Hydropower Project.
