Cold, dry weather to persist across most parts of country: Met Office

Cold and dry weather is expected to prevail across most parts of the country on Friday, while northern regions may experience partly cloudy conditions, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said.

According to the Met Office, plains of Punjab and upper Sindh are likely to be affected by fog during the morning and night hours, which could reduce visibility and disrupt traffic. Motorists have been advised to exercise caution, particularly on highways and motorways.

The PMD said central and southern districts of Balochistan are also expected to remain partly cloudy, though no significant rainfall is forecast for these areas.

Over the past 24 hours, cold and dry conditions were recorded in most parts of the country, with intense cold persisting in northern regions. Extremely low temperatures were reported in several areas, reflecting the severity of the winter spell.

The lowest minimum temperature was recorded in Leh, where the mercury plunged to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Astore recorded minus 6 degrees, Gupis minus 5 degrees, while Skardu, Hunza and Qalat each reported minimum temperatures of minus 4 degrees Celsius. In Kalam, Gilgit, Quetta and Dir, the temperature dropped to minus 3 degrees Celsius.

The Met Office has advised citizens to take precautionary measures in view of the harsh cold, particularly in northern areas. People have been urged to avoid unnecessary travel and to take steps to protect themselves from extreme weather conditions.

Weather officials said cold conditions are likely to continue over the coming days, especially in higher altitudes, as winter tightens its grip across the region.
