CM Punjab Orders Province-Wide Fire Safety Audits and Drills

Authorities added that Rescue 1122 services would be expanded to all tehsils within a year

Lahore (Web Desk/ Our Correspondent): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif on Wednesday chaired a high-level meeting to ensure the safety of lives and property across the province, directing authorities to conduct comprehensive fire safety audits of all markets, buildings, schools, and high-rise structures, along with fire drills throughout Punjab.

The chief minister set a two-week deadline for the completion of fire safety inspections and strict implementation of the Building Safety Act. The meeting decided to assign special powers to the PERA Force and establish a dedicated safety cell to monitor enforcement.

It was made mandatory to keep all internal and external evacuation routes clear and to correct and update safety signage in buildings across the province. The meeting was informed that WASA would install fire hydrants at geo-tagged locations identified by Rescue 1122, equipped with modern firefighting technology, including thermal and other drones.

Officials further briefed that external fire hydrants would be installed in all buildings across Punjab within two weeks, while Rescue 1122 would geo-tag key locations throughout the province. The government will also consult stakeholders from industrial institutions to enhance human and building safety measures.

It was highlighted that Rescue 1122 Punjab is the only emergency service in South Asia with UN certification. Authorities added that Rescue 1122 services would be expanded to all tehsils within a year, with improved emergency response following the ongoing anti-encroachment drive across the province.

Addressing the meeting, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif said courage, wisdom, and modern technology were essential to deal with fire emergencies. She stressed that building safety codes must be strictly enforced, warning that there was no place in Punjab for those who endanger human lives. She underscored that every tehsil, market, building, school, and high-rise in Punjab would now be made safe.
