CM Maryam Nawaz unveils technology-led shrimp farming industry
The project, based on scientific research, marks a new phase in Punjab's blue economy.
LAHORE: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has announced the launch of a technology-led shrimp farming industry in the province under the blue economy vision.
In a post on X on Monday, Maryam Nawaz said Punjab has initiated shrimp breeding using a combination of historical practices, modern technology, aquaculture, and a value chain approach. She noted that after successful trials and research on 100 acres of land, the industry is now officially underway.
The project, based on scientific research, marks a new phase in Punjab’s blue economy. It includes hatcheries, aqua malls, processing plants, cold storage facilities, and an integrated transport chain.
Maryam Nawaz stated that by March 2026, shrimp estates spanning 5,300 acres will be established in Muzaffargarh and Sargodha. She emphasized that the initiative incorporates global research and modern aquaculture technologies, with assistance from experts from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Ecuador, Australia, and Mexico.

The chief minister added that machinery is already on site and teams are working around the clock. A feasibility study is ongoing for an additional 26,000 acres, with the government planning to finalize the project for farmers at the beginning of next year.
