CM Maryam Nawaz Launches Major Education, Environment, and Development Initiatives

Lahore: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled a series of ambitious initiatives to enhance education, environmental protection, tourism, and infrastructure across the province. During a six-hour meeting reviewing departmental progress, the CM emphasized character-building in schools, technology-driven education, and public welfare programs.

Maryam Nawaz directed the launch of character-building classes in schools to guide the younger generation and nurture positive values. She also approved the ‘Education on Wheels’ pilot project in Lahore to bring education to remote areas. According to the briefing, 50,000 courses will be conducted via Google Scholars to provide Punjab students access to advanced global training.

The CM confirmed the appointment of regular principals in 90 percent of colleges, in principle approval for education board leadership positions, and a 47 percent increase in enrollment under the School Meal Program. She highlighted the delivery of 1.5 million benches, 1.1 million milk packs for recycling, and the readiness of 1,600 classrooms, with 22,000 more to be completed within three months.

Infrastructure improvements under the Punjab Schools Reform Program (PSRP) include 500 classrooms, 3,036 roofs, 4,377 repaired toilets, 23,000 furniture sets, 1,643 water tanks, and provision of 44 buses for girls’ colleges. Scholarships under the Honhar Scheme will benefit 140,000 students, while 110,000 laptops will be distributed to further connect youth with technology.

The CM emphasized accountability and directed historic steps to promote the Punjabi language and provide 3-marla plots for 20,000 workers through the ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ scheme, alongside special loans for housing.

On the environmental front, Maryam Nawaz directed tree plantation along railway tracks, roads, and canals, installation of a modern fire alarming system for forest protection, and strict monitoring of illegal tree cutting. She also highlighted achievements in wildlife protection, including the rescue of 35,000 birds and 7,000 animals, establishment of three wildlife rehabilitation centers, and new bear protection centers.

For cleaner air, 41 air quality monitoring stations are operational, with 100 more planned, while crop burning incidents have reduced significantly through drone surveillance and satellite tracking. Industrial monitoring systems and night squads have been established to curb harmful emissions.

In sports and tourism, the CM directed monthly championship events, opening school grounds to the public, and launching the ‘Magnificent Punjab’ app to boost tourism. Shrimp farming has been expanded with exports worth millions, and a five-thousand-acre shrimp farming project is set to start in February 2026.

Maryam Nawaz also called for technology integration in education, including a laptop quota for private universities and the establishment of a College Management Council. She lauded the development of a local smog gun at UET and the creation of Pakistan’s first eco-chatbot.

The CM’s directives reflect a comprehensive approach to education, environment, infrastructure, tourism, and public welfare, aiming to improve the quality of life and promote sustainable development across Punjab.
