CM Maryam Nawaz Launches Groundbreaking Waste-to-Value Project in Punjab

Maryam Nawaz Praises LWMC Biogas Project Success

LAHORE (Asif Iqbal) – Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has inaugurated a landmark Waste-to-Value initiative under her vision for a cleaner, greener Punjab. For the first time in the province, animal waste is being successfully converted into biogas, marking a major breakthrough in sustainable energy production and waste management.

In a pilot project at the Lakhodair disposal site, biodegradable waste from sacrificial animals was used to produce biogas. Officials revealed that 1,000 metric tons of waste could generate approximately 20,000 to 25,000 kilograms of gas, with an expected revenue of Rs 6 to 7 million. The project, completed with minimal investment, has proven a cost-effective and eco-friendly solution for managing post-Eid waste in urban areas like Lahore.

During a high-level briefing chaired by CM Maryam Nawaz, it was highlighted that a 50-megawatt Waste-to-Energy plant is also in the pipeline, which will be capable of converting 3,000 tons of solid waste into electricity daily. Over a ten-year period, gas extracted from landfill sites is projected to generate $2.5 million in revenue.

The meeting also reviewed the model for a state-of-the-art recycling park in Punjab, with an estimated annual earning potential of Rs 190 million. Rehabilitation of the Lakhodair landfill site is expected to yield 275,000 tons in carbon credits annually, translating to an income of approximately $4.2 million.

Officials added that through modern municipal solid waste treatment systems, up to 60% of landfill waste can be reduced significantly, mitigating environmental hazards and promoting urban sustainability.

To further support green innovation, a dedicated Waste-to-Value Incubation Center will be established. It will provide technical support, seed funding, and research and development opportunities for startups working on circular economy and eco-entrepreneurship solutions.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz praised the Lahore Waste Management Company (LWMC) for their successful execution of the biogas production pilot project. She emphasized the government’s commitment to transforming waste into valuable resources, creating economic opportunities while protecting the environment.

This initiative marks a major step forward in turning Punjab into a model province for sustainable development and climate resilience.
