China-Pakistan Partnership Brings Clean Drinking Water to Rural Communities

ISLAMABAD: In a significant step towards improving the quality of life in Pakistan, the relationship between China and Pakistan has once again proven to be more than just economic, as China continues to support social and community uplift programs. One of the most impactful projects is the collaboration between the Overseas Representative Office (ORO) of Yunnan Commerce in Pakistan and the Yunnan Provincial People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, which has taken a leading role in driving socioeconomic development in Pakistan.

Under the Yunnan Hand in Hand Program, a transformative initiative known as “Yunnan Pani” was launched in 2022 to provide clean and safe drinking water to the rural communities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The program is focused on installing solar-powered wells, pumps, water filtration units, and storage tanks to ensure that clean water reaches even the most remote areas.

As of 2024, 13 water systems have been successfully installed in key localities, including Rawat, Sangjani, Tarnol, Sarai Kharboza, and Jhangi Syedaan. These systems, made possible through collaboration with local administration, have been handed over to the respective communities, allowing residents to enjoy access to clean water right at their doorstep. In 2024 alone, three new water systems were installed in the areas of Tarnol, Sarai Kharboza, and Jhangi Syedaan, further expanding the reach of the program. Previous years saw a similar commitment, with five systems installed in 2023 and five in 2022.

One of the most notable aspects of the Yunnan Pani initiative is the active participation of the local community. By involving local mosques, which already had wells, and forming “Yunnan Pani Committees” with local members, the program ensures that the systems are well-maintained, secure, and continuously operational. These committees play a crucial role in the repair, maintenance, and management of the systems, ensuring that clean drinking water remains available for the long term.

This initiative has already benefitted thousands of people who previously lacked access to clean water, providing them with a sustainable and reliable source of drinking water. The residents, who once struggled with unsafe water sources, now have clean, solar-powered water systems at their disposal, making a significant impact on their daily lives and health.

Mr. Li Ping, Director of Yunnan Commerce in Pakistan, expressed his commitment to continuing and expanding such social impact projects in the future. “Yunnan province intends to continue its contributions and expand these social impact initiatives, ensuring more communities benefit from access to clean drinking water,” he said.

The Yunnan Pani program is a powerful example of how international partnerships can make a tangible difference in the lives of ordinary citizens, proving once again that China’s support for Pakistan extends far beyond economic assistance, contributing directly to the welfare of its people.
