China Announces Countermeasures Against US Tariffs, Escalating Trade War

China Adds 16 U.S. Entities to Export Control List, Labels 11 "Unreliable"

BEIJING: China has unveiled a series of countermeasures in response to the tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, including a 34% tariff on all U.S. goods and restrictions on the export of rare earth elements, further intensifying the ongoing trade war between the two nations.

China’s Finance Ministry confirmed that the additional tariffs would come into effect from April 10. This follows President Trump’s announcement earlier this week that China would face an overall 54% tariff, comprising the initial 20% tariff and an additional 34%.

Agricultural trade was notably impacted, as China suspended the import of sorghum from U.S.-based grain exporter C&D (USA) Inc., along with poultry and bonemeal from three U.S. companies.

China also imposed export controls on certain rare earth elements, such as samarium, gadolinium, and dysprosium, critical for various high-tech industries, including electronics and defense. The new regulations are set to begin on April 4.

In a further escalation, China added 16 U.S. entities to its export control list, restricting the export of dual-use items to these firms. Additionally, 11 more U.S. companies were labeled “unreliable entities,” including Skydio Inc. and BRINC Drones, due to their involvement in arms sales to Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory.

The Chinese government emphasized that these measures were designed to safeguard national security and fulfill international obligations such as non-proliferation. Furthermore, Beijing launched an anti-dumping investigation into certain medical CT tubes from the U.S. and India, alongside a broader competitiveness inquiry into medical CT tube imports.

These developments signal an intensifying trade conflict as both countries continue to target each other’s key industries and companies.
