UTAH VALLEY, USA: Charlie Kirk, the influential right-wing youth activist and close ally of former President Donald Trump, was fatally shot on Wednesday during a political event at Utah Valley University in what officials are calling a targeted political assassination. Kirk, 31, was addressing a large crowd when a single gunshot rang out, causing panic and chaos.
Trump confirmed Kirk’s death on social media platform Truth Social, describing him as “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk.” In honor of Kirk, President Trump ordered flags at government buildings and the White House to be lowered to half-staff until Sunday.
FBI Director Kash Patel stated that a suspect, dressed in black and believed to have fired from a campus rooftop, has been taken into custody. The FBI described the shooting as a “horrific” act.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the killing as “a tragic day for our nation” and explicitly called it a “political assassination.” He urged Americans to reflect on the rising violence as the country approaches the 250th anniversary of its founding.
Former Utah congressman Jason Chaffetz, who was present at the rally, recounted that Kirk was responding to questions about religion and mass shootings before the fatal shot was fired. Witnesses described a scene of panic as the crowd scrambled for safety.
Kirk, co-founder of Turning Point USA, played a pivotal role in mobilizing young voters for Trump and shaping conservative youth activism. Known for his strong stances on immigration, Christianity, and gun rights, Kirk was a frequent figure on television and social media, often sparking fierce opposition on college campuses.
The shooting has drawn widespread condemnation across the political spectrum. Vice President JD Vance called for prayers for Kirk, while right-wing commentator Tomi Lahren described him as a “visionary.” On the left, President Joe Biden decried the violence, stating, “There is no place in our country for this kind of violence. It must end now.”

California Governor Gavin Newsom called the attack “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible,” while Vice President Kamala Harris said “political violence has no place in America.” Former Democratic congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, a survivor of a previous assassination attempt, expressed horror and emphasized that political disagreements should never lead to violence.
The nation now grapples with the chilling impact of this political killing as authorities continue their investigation.
