CASS Seminar Advocates Indigenisation and Technological Sovereignty for Pakistan’s Defence

Experts Emphasize Importance of Advanced Technologies in Defence Strategy.

ISLAMABAD: In a groundbreaking seminar hosted by the Centre for Aerospace & Security Studies (CASS) in Islamabad, prominent speakers emphasized the pivotal role of indigenisation and technological sovereignty in shaping Pakistan’s defence evolution. Titled ‘Shifting Battlefields: Impact of Emerging Technologies on the Character of Warfare in South Asia’, the event brought together esteemed experts from defence, technology, and academia to delve into the transformative impact of emerging technologies on modern warfare, particularly in the South Asian context.

The seminar commenced with Air Marshal Farooq Habib (Retd), Senior Director at CASS, highlighting the imperative for Pakistan’s defence sector to adapt and innovate in response to the rapid evolution of military technologies. This sentiment was echoed by Lieutenant General Aamer Riaz (Retd), former President of the National Defence University, who emphasized the necessity for strategic adaptation to emerging technologies to redefine traditional warfare strategies effectively.

Mr Fawad Zahir, a Defence and Strategic Studies Expert, underscored the significance of airpower enhanced by cutting-edge technologies, advocating for robust civilian-military collaboration to harness these advancements for defence purposes. Prof. Dr Yasar Ayaz, Chairman/CPD of the National Centre of Artificial Intelligence (NCAI), emphasized the criticality of indigenous development of AI technologies to ensure strategic autonomy and technological sovereignty.

Furthermore, Mr Khawaja Mohammad Ali, a Cyber Security, Data Privacy, and Digital Forensics Expert, highlighted the crucial role of cyber operations in modern conflict and advocated for comprehensive strategies in cybersecurity. Senior Journalist and Columnist, Mr Zarar Khurro, emphasized the strategic importance of narrative building in the era of advanced technological warfare, stressing the significance of authenticity in narrative construction amidst the influence of social media.

In his Concluding Remarks, President of CASS-Islamabad, Air Marshal Farhat Hussain Khan (Retd), emphasized the urgency of indigenisation strategies to support the development of homegrown technologies, ensuring Pakistan’s defence sector remains competitive and innovative.
