Carney firmly rejects Trump’s claim on Canada’s reliance

Canadian Prime Minister Carney asserts Canada’s independence, responding firmly to Trump’s remarks about U.S. influence on the nation’s survival.

Canadian – (Web Desk) – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed President Donald Trump’s assertion that Canada depends on the United States for its survival. Speaking in Quebec City, Carney highlighted Canada’s independence and sovereignty, responding to Trump’s remarks after returning from Switzerland, where he did not meet with the U.S. president.

“Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership. In the economy, in security and in rich cultural exchange,” Carney said. “But Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian.”

On Wednesday, Trump said at the World Economic Forum in Davos that “Canada lives because of the United States,” and asked Carney to “remember that” in his next statement.

Trump’s comment followed Carney’s speech in Davos on Tuesday, where he warned of a “rupture” in “American hegemony” and urged smaller powers to resist coercion from great powers.
