Canada must become a global superpower
Canada's Potential: Vast Resources but Lagging Behind in Growth
Amid rising tensions with the United States, particularly over trade and the growing threat of annexation, Canada finds itself at a pivotal moment in its history. The situation has pushed the country beyond its previous complacency and has sparked a wave of patriotism and nationalism across the country. A recent survey revealed that the percentage of Canadians who express a “deep emotional attachment” to their country has risen from 49% to 59% in just a few months. Interestingly, the province of Quebec showed the largest increase in this sense of attachment.
For many, this shift in national sentiment raises the question: Where do we go from here? Can we seize this moment to become a global superpower? Despite its strengths, Canada has long been a quiet, peaceful country, but now it is time to prepare itself on the global stage.
Canada is home to vast resources, from being the second-largest country by land area to having the longest coastline and the third-largest proven oil reserves in the world. The country also boasts a highly educated workforce, is a leader in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, and green tech, and ranks highly in terms of quality of life. However, despite these advantages, Canada still lags behind its G7 peers in terms of GDP growth and faces significant challenges, including declining productivity and a severe housing crisis.
As the United States increasingly moves away from its historical dependence on Canadian resources, it is time for Canada to chart its own course. The country needs to break free from old patterns and focus on key areas that can accelerate its growth and influence.
First, Canada should consider becoming a republic with its own head of state, reflecting its aspirations as a sovereign superpower. In addition, Canada should increase its defense spending and gain stronger control over its Arctic territories, while also removing internal barriers to trade that hinder economic growth. The country needs to create a sovereign wealth fund, like Norway, to address its housing crisis, grow its population, and ensure long-term economic stability.
Canada should also invest in infrastructure, expand international trade beyond the United States, and take a leadership role in emerging technologies, such as cryptocurrency. The goal is to foster innovation, encourage private investment, and transform Canada’s world-class research into thriving businesses that can create wealth and jobs.

While much work remains to be done, this moment is an opportunity for Canada to redefine its future. The country has the potential to become a global superpower, but it requires decisive leadership, bold ideas, and a commitment to embrace change. As the world changes, Canada must ensure it remains strong, resilient, and ready to lead in the 21st century.
