Blinken: World is Safer After Death of Hezbollah Leader Hassan Nasrallah

WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated on Monday (Sept 30) that the world is now safer following the death of Hassan Nasrallah, referring to the Hezbollah leader as a “brutal terrorist” while emphasizing that diplomacy is the best hope for stability in the Middle East.

“The region and the world are safer without him,” Blinken remarked in Washington, speaking about the deceased leader of the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group.

He described Nasrallah as a “brutal terrorist” whose numerous victims included Americans, Israelis, and civilians in Lebanon and Syria, among others. “During his leadership of Hezbollah, the group instilled terror across the region and hindered Lebanon’s progress as a nation,” he added during opening remarks at a meeting of countries involved in the coalition against the Islamic State group.

Despite the recent escalation in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon, Blinken reiterated that the U.S. believes diplomacy is the best way forward for the region.

“The United States will continue collaborating with our partners both in the region and globally to pursue a diplomatic resolution that ensures genuine security for Israel and Lebanon and enables citizens on both sides of the border to return home,” he stated.

Blinken also affirmed the U.S. commitment to securing a ceasefire in Gaza that would facilitate the return of hostages, alleviate suffering in the area, and maintain the potential for a more enduring and secure peace across the region. He concluded that diplomacy remains “the best and only path to achieving greater stability in the Middle East,” and Washington is “dedicated to urgently advancing these efforts.”
