Bilawal Urges Swift Passage of Constitutional Amendments Ahead of CJ Isa’s Retirement
Bilawal Criticizes PTI’s Remarks, Urges Focus on National Unity
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari stressed the urgency of passing the constitutional amendments before October 25, the scheduled retirement date of Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa. During an appearance on a private television show, Bilawal highlighted the need for bipartisan cooperation and called on the government to engage all political parties in the finalization of the amendments.
Bilawal pointed out that the government had consulted the judiciary on the proposed reforms before involving political allies, and that the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) was also given the opportunity to participate in the process. “Whether it pertains to the parliamentary system or the judiciary, the goal is to collaborate for a better future,” he stated.
He emphasized the importance of forming a parliamentary committee that includes representatives from all political parties, underlining that the amendments should be a product of consensus, not coercion. Bilawal also praised Chief Justice Isa for delegating responsibilities to other judges, and acknowledged both Justice Isa and Justice Mansoor Ali Shah with respect. He reiterated that the PPP is committed to passing the amendments with widespread agreement, without relying on influential political figures.
“We seek constitutional amendments that are supported by broad consensus,” Bilawal remarked, further noting that the PPP had been aligned with Maulana Fazlur Rehman on the issue from the beginning.
The PPP leader condemned recent remarks by PTI founder Imran Khan, accusing him of politicizing the role of the army chief and reducing the likelihood of constructive dialogue. “Imran Khan’s statement has lessened the chances for meaningful discussions, but the PPP remains open to engaging with the PTI,” Bilawal stated, adding that the PTI had not yet formally approached his party for talks.
