Biden and European Leaders Push for Gaza Ceasefire After Hamas Leader Yahya Sinwar Killed

US President calls Sinwar’s death a “positive step” toward peace and hostage negotiations.

US President Joe Biden and European leaders are expected to renew their calls for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip after Israel confirmed the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar.

During his farewell visit to Germany, Biden called Sinwar’s death a “positive development,” expressing hope that it could lead to a ceasefire and facilitate negotiations for the release of hostages.

Speaking aboard Air Force One en route to Germany, Biden remarked that Sinwar’s removal was a key step toward achieving peace in Gaza. Alongside German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Biden is also expected to reaffirm military support for Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.

Biden’s 24-hour trip comes as Ukraine braces for another difficult winter of war, following President Volodymyr Zelensky’s presentation of his “victory plan” to EU and NATO leaders in Brussels. With the US election approaching, concerns are growing about the possible return of Donald Trump, who has been critical of NATO and opposed large-scale US military assistance to Ukraine.

In Berlin, Biden will discuss the Israel-Hamas conflict and the potential for wider regional escalation involving Iran. He will also offer congratulations to Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu while exploring avenues for securing the release of hostages and bringing an end to the violence.

Scholz confirmed that a ceasefire proposal was discussed, with Biden and other allied leaders fully backing the initiative. Biden’s visit to Germany, originally planned to be longer, was shortened due to Hurricane Milton, though his focus remains on strengthening US-German ties, which have deepened during his presidency.

During the visit, Biden will be awarded Germany’s Grand Cross of the Order of Merit, honoring his contributions to improving German-American relations and bolstering the transatlantic alliance, particularly in response to Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Zelensky’s request for NATO membership and discussions regarding security guarantees will also be addressed, with Macron stressing the importance of ongoing dialogue. The US continues to be Ukraine’s largest provider of military aid, with efforts underway to ensure sustained support for Ukraine throughout the conflict.
