Ben Stokes vows revival after Ashes defeat

England captain Stokes committed to turnaround despite tough Ashes loss

LONDON: (Web Desk) – England captain Ben Stokes has described the past three months as the “hardest period” of his tenure but remains determined to lead a revival in the Test team’s fortunes.

Despite England’s 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia, the England and Wales Cricket Board confirmed that Stokes, managing director Rob Key, and coach Brendon McCullum will continue in their roles. Key dismissed suggestions of a rift between Stokes and McCullum during the tour, saying the leadership team remains aligned.

In an emotional Instagram post, Stokes reflected on the lows of his near four-year captaincy and emphasized his commitment to learning from mistakes. He wrote: “Being England captain is the greatest honour a player can be given. The last three months has without a doubt been the hardest period of my captaincy journey… Baz, Rob, and myself have the passion and desire to take this team forward.”

Off-field concerns have added pressure, with reports of excessive drinking by players and an altercation involving vice-captain Harry Brook during a pre-Ashes tour in New Zealand. In response, a midnight curfew has been implemented, and the ECB is recruiting a new national selector after Luke Wright resigned for family reasons.

Stokes has not played since sustaining a groin injury in the fifth Ashes Test but is expected to feature for Durham in the County Championship ahead of England’s upcoming home series. England will face New Zealand in three Tests in June, followed by three matches against Pakistan in August and September.

Stokes concluded with a passionate message to fans: “I FG love cricket, I FG love this team, I F*****G love being England captain… We all appreciate every single person who supports us… See you all in June for the start of the Test Match summer.”
