Barcelona’s Iconic Basilica Could Be Finished Within a Decade

Gaudi's dream is almost reality. Discover the updated timeline for finishing Barcelona's iconic Sagrada Família basilica after 144 years.

Barcelona – (Special Correspondent / Web Desk) – Antoni Gaudí’s famous Sagrada Família church in Barcelona is getting closer to being finished. The team in charge now hopes to complete the modern basilica in about ten more years. This is over a century after the famous architect passed away.

The project’s leader, Esteve Camps, said he has learned to be careful with timing. The COVID pandemic caused a big drop in ticket sales, which are vital for funding. This pushed the final date past the original goal of 2026.

While they cannot give an exact date, the team believes that without any major problems, the work could likely be done within a decade. Gaudí began working on the church in 1883 and continued until his death in 1926. To mark 100 years since he died, leaders hope to finish the outside of the main tower next year. This tower, dedicated to Jesus Christ, will be the tallest building in Barcelona at 172.5 meters.

When fully complete, the Sagrada Família will have three grand entrances and eighteen towers. Pope Francis has been invited to lead a special ceremony for the new tower next June. An answer from the Vatican is expected soon.

The current head architect, Jordi Fauli, says the main tower is already over 155 meters tall. The lower half of the giant cross that will sit on top has already been built. Local city planners still need to approve plans for a large staircase outside the main door. This plan might require tearing down at least one apartment building, which has caused some protests from people who live nearby.

The project leader is confident the staircase will be approved but admits it will need talks with the city. If local opposition continues, the issue could even go to court. Like much of Barcelona, the iconic church is also very crowded with tourists. Last year, a record 4.9 million people visited. Officials note that even when finished, the maximum number of people allowed inside will not change.
