Bangladesh cancels deal with India, posing threat to Northeast Internet Connectivity
New Delhi: In a significant blow to India’s plans to enhance mobile internet connectivity in its northeastern states, Bangladesh has canceled a key bandwidth transit agreement. The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) terminated the deal that would have allowed Indian telecom company Bharti Airtel to use Bangladesh as a transit point for high-speed internet bandwidth from Singapore to India.
The decision, announced on December 1 by Bangladesh’s interim government, was motivated by concerns over the lack of economic benefit for Bangladesh, as well as growing bilateral tensions. The move is also seen as part of an effort to reduce the influence of companies with ties to the ruling Awami League party.\

The cancellation is expected to disrupt India’s connectivity project, which aimed to improve internet services in remote areas of the northeastern region. The decision raises further doubts about the future of regional cooperation between the two countries.
