“Back Soon to Face Consequences,” Says Mohsin Naqvi on Foreign Critics

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi Warns Against Fake News on Social Media

Lahore: Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has warned that individuals spreading fake news on social media from abroad should not expect any protection, adding that strict action will be taken against those disseminating false information.

Speaking at a press conference in Lahore, Naqvi said that up to 90% of news circulating on social media is false. He emphasized that it is unacceptable for anyone to post misinformation online, and a crackdown on fake news is imminent.

Naqvi contrasted social media with national media, noting that TV channels operate under a regulated system, where incorrect reporting is subject to fines under PEMRA rules. He clarified that journalists spreading false news are not exercising freedom of expression; while free speech is protected, spreading fake news is not permissible.

He added that defaming anyone on social media will not be tolerated, and matters concerning national security will not be compromised. Addressing critics abroad, Naqvi said: “Those spreading nonsense from London, claiming issues within our institutions, should present their evidence. Those sitting abroad spreading fake news will not be safe; they will be brought back soon and held accountable.”
