Azerbaijan Marks 107 Years of Independence with Focus on Sovereignty and Leadership
In recognition of these milestones, Azerbaijan has declared 2025 the Year of Constitution and Sovereignty.
Baku– Today marks the 107th anniversary of the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, the first secular republic in the Muslim East, founded on May 28, 1918. Across the country, Azerbaijani citizens are commemorating a day that symbolizes national resilience, the enduring pursuit of sovereignty, and a proud legacy of democratic traditions.
Despite lasting only 23 months, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic played a crucial role in shaping the country’s political identity—founding its first parliament, defining national borders, and establishing the core principles of statehood. These milestones laid a strong foundation for the modern Republic of Azerbaijan, which restored its independence in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union.
This year’s celebrations also highlight the leadership of National Leader Heydar Aliyev and the continuing efforts of President Ilham Aliyev in advancing Azerbaijan’s development and preserving its sovereignty. Under President Aliyev’s leadership, the country has navigated significant geopolitical challenges, including the 2020 liberation of Azerbaijani territories previously under Armenian occupation—a victory reaffirmed by a swift military operation in September 2023 that restored full national sovereignty in Karabakh.
In recognition of these milestones, Azerbaijan has declared 2025 the Year of Constitution and Sovereignty.
Azerbaijan’s diplomatic ties with Pakistan remain strong and deeply rooted. Pakistan was among the first countries to recognize Azerbaijan’s independence in 1991. Since then, both nations have enjoyed close cooperation in bilateral and international forums, including firm support during and after the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.

Further underlining its growing global influence, Azerbaijan recently hosted the COP29 climate conference, bringing together world leaders to address climate challenges. Pakistan’s participation, led by its Prime Minister, signaled a deepening of environmental cooperation between the two brotherly countries.
As Azerbaijan celebrates more than a century of its national journey, it continues to champion principles of peace, development, and international solidarity.
