Islamabad – National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq has reiterated his commitment to fostering dialogue and resolving political tensions during his address to the media following the conclusion of the 18th Speakers Conference on Friday. Sadiq emphasized that while the doors of the parliament are open for negotiations, no one can be forced to engage in talks.
“If someone comes to us for negotiations, we will play a role. Our doors are open, and we will not refuse anyone,” Sadiq declared, expressing optimism that initiating talks would pave the way for progress. He added, “I am sure that the day negotiations begin, the matter will definitely move forward. We will facilitate quietly and recite Ayatul Kursi and Durood Sharif for everyone’s betterment.”
Sadiq also acknowledged the possibility of negotiations with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) members, noting that while discussions could only begin when they approach him, he could not force anyone to engage in dialogue. “For the betterment, we will plead with whomever we have to. The day negotiations begin, a path ahead will start being built,” he stated.
Addressing the ongoing political stalemate, Sadiq urged both the government and opposition to prioritize the formation of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC). He added, “If they fail to do so, I will form the committee myself,” highlighting his commitment to ensuring the smooth functioning of parliamentary processes.
Sadiq also outlined significant institutional reforms aimed at strengthening the National Assembly Secretariat. “Officers below Grade 20 will not be taken on deputation. The authority of the speaker in recruitments has been abolished, and decisions will now be made by the Finance Committee,” he announced, stressing that these changes would contribute to the independence of the Secretariat.

The Speaker praised the participants of the 18th Speakers Conference for their dedication to upholding the Constitution and ensuring the supremacy of parliament. “We will continue to work for the supremacy of parliament and democracy. Difference of opinion is the beauty of democracy,” he remarked. He also announced that the next conference will be hosted by the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Assembly, with AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan becoming members of the Pakistan Institute for Parliamentary Services (PIPS).
Gilani Calls for National Unity and Economic Stability
Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, addressing journalists after the conference, echoed Sadiq’s call for unity and stability. Gilani lauded the 18th Amendment for promoting national cohesion and empowering smaller provinces. He stressed the importance of implementing decisions made under the amendment for the sake of political stability.
Gilani also highlighted the need for an economic pact to ensure national stability and pointed to the role of Artificial Intelligence in modern governance. “Difference of opinion is the beauty of democracy, but it should not harm the country,” Gilani remarked, underscoring the importance of unity in diversity.
Both leaders emphasized the need for increased efforts to address pressing public issues, including climate change, and called for a “charter” to ensure that parliament functions ethically and in alignment with established rules. Their calls for cooperation and reform reflect a commitment to ensuring the effectiveness and integrity of Pakistan’s democratic institutions.
