Awareness session on gender-based violence concludes in Gilgit
Two-day gender-based violence and human rights session held in Gilgit
GILGIT: (Musab Khaliq) – A two-day awareness session on “Gender-Based Violence and Human Rights,” organized by the Human Rights Council of Gilgit-Baltistan (HRC-GB) with the special support of the Gilgit-Baltistan Rural Support Programme (GBRSP) and the Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund (PPAF), concluded successfully in Gilgit.
The session was attended by representatives of civil society, lawyers, social activists, students, and individuals from various walks of life. The objective of the program was to raise awareness about gender-based violence, women’s rights, human dignity, and the importance of responsible social behavior.
Speaking at the event, GBRSP Manager Manzoor Ahmed Qureshi said that gender-based violence is a serious social issue that affects not only individuals but society as a whole. He emphasized that the protection of human rights is a collective responsibility and that awareness sessions like these play a vital role in sensitizing communities. He stressed the need for joint institutional and social efforts to safeguard the rights of women and vulnerable groups.
President of the Human Rights Council of Gilgit-Baltistan, Advocate Aman Ali Shah Bugoro, termed gender-based violence a grave crime against human dignity. He said that along with effective legislation, positive changes in societal attitudes are essential to eradicate the menace. He reaffirmed that HRC-GB would continue to provide legal assistance and guidance to victims.
General Secretary HRC-GB, Sadaqat Ali Sahil, said that eliminating gender-based violence is not possible without awareness, education, and community participation. He urged the youth to play an active role in promoting human rights and social justice.
Joint Secretary HRC-GB, Advocate Habiba Aslam, said that the fight against gender-based violence should begin at home. She stressed the need to treat daughters and sons equally and ensure women’s participation in decision-making processes, adding that a strong and just society is built through practical implementation of equality at the household level.
During the session, Advocate Aashi Batool delivered a special presentation highlighting human rights, gender-based violence, and the importance of using responsible and positive language. She noted that constructive narratives are key to eliminating violence and discriminatory attitudes.
Other speakers, including HRC members Advocate Aashi, Naseema Sheikh, Deedar Baig, Javed Mas, and others, also addressed the gathering and emphasized the need for collective and practical measures to address issues faced by women.

Members of the Human Rights Council of Gilgit-Baltistan, including Information Secretary Kamran Ali and District Coordinator Advocate Aashi Batool, actively participated in the session and contributed to its success.
The program was held in a positive and cordial environment. At the conclusion of the session, certificates were distributed among participants, who termed the initiative effective and beneficial in raising awareness about gender-based violence and human rights.
