Austria approves nationwide social media ban for under 14 children
Austria introduces digital literacy alongside social media ban
Vienna: (Web Desk) – Austria has approved a nationwide ban on social media use for children under the age of 14, alongside new education reforms focused on digital literacy and artificial intelligence training.
According to international reports, the country’s Vice Chancellor said during a press briefing that social media is negatively affecting young people, making age restrictions necessary—similar to limits already placed on other age-sensitive content and products.
The government confirmed that the ban will be enforced across the country and that Austria will also push for similar regulations at the European Union level.
Alongside the restriction, authorities announced major changes to the education system starting from the 2027/28 academic year. Media literacy will become a formal subject at the upper secondary level to help students better understand digital content and its impact.
In addition, informatics courses will be expanded to include artificial intelligence education, aiming to equip students with knowledge about how digital systems work, along with their risks and opportunities.
The decision reflects a broader global trend of governments tightening rules on children’s access to social media due to concerns over mental health, safety, and online exposure.
