Australia Stun Turkey 2-0 in World Cup Opener

Socceroos Defeat Turkey in Major World Cup Shock

Vancouver: (Web Desk) – Australia delivered a major upset in their FIFA World Cup Group D opener, defeating Turkey 2-0 at BC Place Stadium on Saturday, thanks to goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe and a standout performance from goalkeeper Patrick Beach.

Australia head coach Tony Popovic made a bold selection call, dropping experienced captain and goalkeeper Maty Ryan in favour of Beach, who was making only his third international appearance. The decision paid off as the young goalkeeper produced a series of crucial saves to keep Turkey at bay.

Popovic also left out vice-captain Jackson Irvine, opting instead for 21-year-old midfielder Paul Okon-Engstler, with the starting XI featuring 10 World Cup debutants. Okon-Engstler played a key role in the opening goal, delivering a long pass that split the Turkish defence and set up Irankunda.

Turkey, returning to the World Cup for the first time since 2002, dominated possession and created several chances but were repeatedly denied by Beach, who delivered a commanding performance between the posts.

One of Turkey’s best opportunities came in the 27th minute when Arda Güler tested Beach with a powerful shot, but the Australian goalkeeper produced a strong save to keep the score level.

Australia broke the deadlock shortly after, when Irankunda latched onto Okon-Engstler’s long ball, used his pace and control to beat the defence, and finished calmly with a low strike. The winger celebrated with a tribute-style boxing gesture near the corner flag.

Turkey came close to equalising minutes later through Abdulkerim Bardakcı, whose long-range effort struck the post after a fingertip save from Beach.

Beach continued his impressive form in the second half, including a key save from a Güler free-kick, as Australia absorbed sustained pressure.

The Socceroos sealed the victory in the 75th minute when Connor Metcalfe advanced from midfield and fired a powerful 25-yard strike into the net.

The result puts Australia level on three points with Group D leaders the United States, setting up a crucial upcoming clash between the two sides in Seattle.
