Australia Complete 5-0 T20I Sweep Over West Indies with Win in St Kitts
West Indies skipper Shai Hope lamented his side’s inconsistency with the bat throughout the series.
Basseterre — Australia wrapped up a dominant tour of the West Indies by securing a 5-0 clean sweep in the T20I series, following a three-wicket victory in the fifth and final match in Basseterre.
Chasing 171 for victory, Australia overcame early setbacks at 25-3 and 60-4 to reach the target with three overs to spare, finishing on 173-7.
Left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis starred with the ball, removing both West Indies openers—Brandon King (11) and Shai Hope (9)—before claiming the key wicket of top-scorer Shimron Hetmyer. His performance earned him the Player of the Match award.
Hetmyer had staged a brief fightback for the hosts with a 31-ball 52, featuring three fours and three sixes, lifting West Indies from 64-4 to a respectable 155-7 before falling to a slower ball from Dwarshuis.
“It was a little bit of a slower wicket, so we tried to hit the wicket hard and use the slower balls as well,” said Dwarshuis after the match.
In reply, Cameron Green stabilized the innings with a well-compiled 32, while power-hitter Tim David smashed 30 off just 12 balls, including four sixes and a four. Mitchell Owen added 37 crucial runs to push Australia closer to the target.
At 141-6, with 30 runs still needed, the game hung in the balance, but Aaron Hardie showed nerves of steel, guiding the visitors home with an unbeaten 28.
“I didn’t expect 5-0 at the start of the series. But we played some great cricket,” said Australia captain Mitchell Marsh.
West Indies skipper Shai Hope lamented his side’s inconsistency with the bat throughout the series.
“We never put together a proper batting display. We either started well or finished poorly, or the other way round. Against a quality team you can’t get away with that,” Hope admitted.
