Pakistan, UK review economic cooperation and regional situation

ISLAMABAD (Web Desk) – Pakistan’s Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb met Jane Marriott in Islamabad to discuss economic cooperation between Pakistan and the United Kingdom as well as key regional developments.

During the meeting, both sides exchanged views on the regional situation and Pakistan’s broader economic strategy, according to reports aired by 24NewsHD on Thursday. They also discussed measures to enhance investor confidence and agreed to strengthen cooperation in the minerals sector.

The finance minister informed the British envoy that, on the directions of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, a high-level committee is conducting daily economic reviews to monitor the evolving situation.

Aurangzeb said authorities are closely observing energy supply trends and global commodity markets, while detailed assessments are being carried out regarding the availability of petroleum products, oil, coal and gas.

He noted that Pakistan currently has adequate energy reserves and arrangements in place, adding that the government is engaged in scenario planning to address any potential regional impacts.

The finance minister also reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to meeting the targets set under its programme with the International Monetary Fund.

Aurangzeb said the government remains focused on expanding the tax net and boosting revenue collection as part of its broader economic reform agenda.

He further noted that Pakistan recorded an economic growth rate of 3.7 percent during the first quarter of the current fiscal year, reflecting gradual economic recovery.

On the occasion, the UK envoy reiterated continued British support for Pakistan’s economic reform efforts. Both sides also agreed to work together to strengthen investor confidence and explore cooperation opportunities in the minerals sector.
