Atta Tarar Says Violence Will Not Undermine Kashmir Democratic Process Ever

ISLAMABAD: (Mudassar Iqbal) – Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar has said that the Kashmir cause will not be undermined and that no individual or group will be allowed to impose its will through violence or intimidation.

Speaking at a press conference, Tarar said the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir had rejected what he described as “miscreants” and alleged that the banned Joint Action Committee was attempting to create controversy around the recently held elections.

He claimed the group opposed the region’s development and had failed in its attempts to disrupt the democratic process. According to the minister, around 600,000 votes were cast in the Mirpur Division during the first phase of the AJK elections, with political parties participating actively.

Tarar further alleged that banned weapons had been recovered from individuals linked to the group and said the government of Pakistan stood firmly with the Azad Jammu and Kashmir government in maintaining law and order.

Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry, who also addressed the press conference, alleged that the movement associated with the Action Committee was aimed at depriving Kashmiris of their democratic rights rather than securing them.

He claimed the movement included both domestic and foreign elements and alleged that violence was being carried out under the cover of protest. Chaudhry maintained that the use of weapons had no place in peaceful demonstrations.

The minister further stated that 37 of the committee’s 38 demands had already been accepted, arguing that the continued protests were unjustified. He alleged that attempts were made to disrupt the electoral process through violent demonstrations and that unrest followed when those efforts were unsuccessful.

The allegations made by the ministers have not been independently verified. Representatives of the Joint Action Committee had not immediately responded to the claims.
