Assembly of Experts choose Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s supreme leader

Iran’s clerical council agrees on new leader. Official statement may come soon.

Assembly of Experts, the powerful clerical body that chooses Iran’s top leader, has reportedly settled on a new Supreme Leader. An official announcement is expected soon.

Reports in Iranian media say most members of the Assembly have agreed on a successor to Ali Khamenei. However, some procedural and security matters still need to be completed before the decision is made public.

Assembly members Ahmad Alamolhoda and Mohammad Baqir confirmed that a decision has been reached. They said the final statement will be released by the Assembly itself.

According to several members, most clerics have agreed on Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Ali Khamenei, as the country’s next Supreme Leader.

Arab media reports say the public announcement is being delayed because of security concerns. British media also reported that the Assembly has already reached a broad agreement on the leadership change.

Israeli media reports have similarly claimed that Mojtaba Khamenei has been selected to assume the position of Supreme Leader, although Iranian authorities have yet to formally announce the decision.

The Assembly of Experts is the deliberative body of Iran empowered to appoint, supervise, and discharge the Supreme Leader of Iran.

All directly elected members must first be vetted by the Guardian Council, whose members are, in turn, appointed either directly or indirectly by the Supreme Leader.
