Assaad al-Shibani Appointed as Syrian Foreign Minister in Transitional Government

ISLAMABAD: Assaad al-Shibani has been appointed as the new foreign minister of Syria, following the recent overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad nearly two weeks ago. The announcement was made on Saturday by the general command of the fighters who toppled Assad, marking a significant shift in the country’s leadership.

In a statement released on Telegram, the transitional government declared, “The general command announces the nomination of Mr. Assaad Hassan al-Shibani to the post of foreign minister in the new Syrian government.” The statement further highlighted his involvement in the Syrian revolution that began in 2011 and his role in establishing the Salvation Government in 2017.

The Salvation Government, which was created to support areas cut off from state services, has seen many of its members appointed to key positions in the new administration. Shibani, born in 1987 in Hasakeh province, graduated from Damascus University with a degree in English literature and holds a master’s degree in political science and international relations.

Shibani, also known as Zaid al-Attar, recently engaged with French and German delegations during their visits to Damascus, as the new authorities seek to open diplomatic channels. The newly formed government, under the leadership of Ahmed al-Sharaa, has expressed its commitment to promoting “regional peace” and fostering strategic partnerships with neighboring countries.

The new authorities also emphasized Syria’s stance of neutrality, asserting that the Syrian people stand at an equal distance from all countries and reject any efforts at polarization in the region.
