Asad Umar Shah Mehmood Qureshi arrested from Islamabad

ISLAMABA/Lahore – Asad Umar, vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi, and central Punjab president Dr Yasmin Rashid were also taken into custody on Wednesday.    Mr Qureshi was arrested from the Red Zone in Islamabad. Police said that Mr Qureshi had been arrested under 3 Maintenance of Public Order (MPO), 1860 for fifteen days. Both were shifted to Secretariat Police Station, Islamabad.

Sources said PTI senior vice president Fawad Chaudhry had been residing inside the SC to evade a possible arrest.

Asad was about to leave for the Supreme Court to challenge the IHC decision on Imran Khan’s arrest along with Shah Mehmood Qureshi when he was taken into custody. Asad was whisked away by the Anti-Terror Squad.

The former finance minister was in the IHC to file a petition to seek a meeting with PTI Chairman Imran Khan. It is not clear on what charges Asad has been arrested.

According to eyewitnesses, the PTI lawyers resisted police to prevent Asad’s arrest, but the law enforcers overpowered them and took him away.

Two cases have been registered against him and other PTI leaders following the protests that ensued after Imran’s arrest. The cases were registered in Islamabad’s Tarnol and Aabpara police stations.

PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Senator Saifullah Sarwar Khan Niazi and Ghulam Sarwar Khan were also with Asad Umar when the CTD men swooped on him. All three leaders returned to the IHC’s Bar Room after Asad was held by police.

A day after the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan, party’s Vice President Asad Umar has also been taken into custody on Wednesday.

Asad was about to leave for the Supreme Court to challenge the IHC decision on Imran Khan’s arrest along with Shah Mehmood Qureshi when he was taken into custody.

Asad was whisked away by the Anti-Terror Squad to an “undisclosed” place.

The former finance minister was in the IHC to file a petition to seek a meeting with PTI Chairman Imran Khan.

It is not clear on what charges Asad has been arrested.

Earlier,

Anti-corruption Punjab on Wednesday arrested former Punjab governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema.

According to anti-corruption officials, Tehreek-e-Insaf leader Omar Sarfraz Cheema was arrested from his residence early in the morning.

Omar Sarfaraz Cheema has been accused of misusing his powers as governor and giving his sister a share by forging the family registration certificate.

According to the family of the PTI leader, ‘unknown’ men in plain clothes took Omar Cheema into custody. They did not inform on which charges they took Omar Cheema into custody, the family added.

Protests erupted across Pakistan following Imran Khan’s arrest from the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) where he was present for biometric verification in two cases.
Earlier, several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders were booked over vandalism in protests after the arrest of PTI chairman and former prime minister Imran Khan.
