Around 100 Injured After German Cup Fan Violence

ISLAMABAD: (Sports Desk) – Around 100 people, including 35 police officers, were injured following violent incidents involving supporters during Friday’s German Cup first-round clash between hosts Waldhof Mannheim Lionel Messi’s Father Jorge Messi Dies Aged 68and Kaiserslautern, police confirmed on Saturday.

The match had been classified as high-risk because of the intense rivalry between the two sets of supporters. With the score still 0-0 at the end of normal time, play was suspended for around 30 minutes after trouble broke out inside the stadium.

According to police, supporters in the Kaiserslautern section launched flares toward the main stand, prompting home fans to enter the pitch in response.

Police said 85 people required medical treatment, while eight were taken to hospital for further care.

Play eventually resumed after a major police operation on the field. Officers used physical force to push individuals back toward the home supporters’ section and restore order.

Authorities had deployed nearly 1,400 police officers for the fixture because of the rivalry between the clubs, which are based approximately 50 kilometres apart.

Despite the lengthy interruption, the match went into extra time. Kaiserslautern eventually secured a 1-0 victory when Ibrahim Kanate scored in the 120th minute.
