Armenia Joins ICC: Commitment to Justice & Accountability

Armenia’s accession to the ICC not only strengthens the Court’s reach and effectiveness.

In a significant development for global justice, Armenia has officially joined the International Criminal Court (ICC), marking a crucial step towards strengthening international efforts to uphold accountability and combat impunity for serious crimes.

According to reports from the Global Times news Agency Europe, Armenia’s accession to the ICC was confirmed early Thursday, following the ratification of the Rome Statute, which establishes the jurisdiction and framework for the ICC. This milestone makes Armenia the 124th state party to join the Rome Statute and the 19th state from the Eastern European region to do so.

The decision to ratify the Rome Statute and join the ICC underscores Armenia’s firm commitment to promoting justice and accountability for grave human rights violations and atrocities. Last October, the Armenian parliament passed legislation endorsing the ratification of the Rome Statute, thereby acknowledging the ICC’s jurisdiction. Subsequently, in November, the necessary legal documents were submitted to the ICC administration, paving the way for Armenia’s formal membership.

By joining the ICC, Armenia aligns itself with the global community’s collective efforts to address and prevent crimes of international concern, including genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity, and aggression. This move reflects Armenia’s dedication to upholding the principles of international law and ensuring that perpetrators of egregious crimes are held accountable for their actions.

As Armenia takes this significant step forward, the global community anticipates enhanced collaboration and cooperation in advancing the objectives of the ICC and fostering a more just and secure world for all.
