Amir Proposes Haris as Pakistan’s New T20 Captain

ISLAMABAD: Former Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir has proposed a new captain for the national T20 team, recommending a young wicketkeeper-batsman, Mohammad Haris, for the leadership role.

In an interview with a private TV channel, Mohammad Amir stated that Mohammad Haris would be an “excellent choice” to lead the team. Amir highlighted Haris’ previous experience as a captain in List A cricket and various domestic competitions, including the Champions Cup, Pakistan A, and Pakistan Shaheens.

Amir also pointed out that Agha Salman, who has been appointed as the T20 captain for the upcoming New Zealand tour, is better suited for the longer formats of the game. He added that if the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) was looking to appoint a new captain, they should have considered Mohammad Haris, who has been “groomed” in domestic cricket.

Meanwhile, former cricketer Ahmad Shahzad suggested that Saim Ayub would be a better choice for the T20 captaincy, given his skills in the shortest format.

Earlier, the PCB announced the ODI and T20I squads for the upcoming New Zealand tour. Mohammad Rizwan will captain the ODI side, with all-rounder Salman Agha serving as his deputy. Salman Agha has been appointed as the T20I captain, while Shadab Khan returns as the vice-captain of the team.

Opening batter Abdullah Shafique has made a comeback to the ODI squad, along with Mohammad Wasim Jr., who last played in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The ODI squad also includes Imam-ul-Haq, Babar Azam, Faheem Ashraf, Tayyab Tahir, Khushdil Shah, Irfan Khan Niazi, Abrar Ahmed, Akif Javed, Mohammad Ali, Sufyan Muqim, and Naseem Shah.
