Aleema Khan Detained Under 3-MPO, LHC Seeks Official Report
Court demands answers as family fights detention order and asks for basic jail rights
Lahore High Court – (Staff Reporter/Web Desk) – Aleema Khan detained by police in Lahore has turned into a fresh legal fight, after the Lahore High Court asked concerned authorities to submit a report on a petition filed against her arrest. The case is now drawing wide attention across the country.
Aleema, who is the sister of PTI founder Imran Khan, was picked up by police on September 20 in Lahore. She was held under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order, a law commonly known as MPO. She was then moved to Kot Lakhpat jail.
Just a day after her arrest, her sisters Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan were also taken into custody under the same law. Police had recommended their detention as well, and both women were placed under the same legal order.
These arrests came right before PTI’s planned nationwide protest movement. The party has called for a long march toward Islamabad on September 27. The main demand behind the march is the release of Imran Khan and support for the country’s Constitution.
Following his mother’s detention, Aleema’s son moved court and filed a petition. The petition challenges the legality of her arrest, along with the detention of her driver, who was taken into custody at the same time.
The case was heard by Justice Abhar Gul Khan. Lawyer Rana Mudassir represented the family and told the court that the detention order had no legal basis and did not match the facts on record.
The lawyer also raised concerns about jail conditions. He said Aleema was not being allowed to receive medicines or clothes inside Kot Lakhpat jail. He asked the court to call the local police officer and deputy commissioner personally to explain the matter.
Justice Khan responded that the issue of medicines and clothing should be raised through a separate application rather than the main petition. Soon after, a new plea was filed asking the court to ensure medicines, clothes, and access to family and lawyers for Aleema.
The Punjab Home Department was named as one of the respondents in this new petition. The court is expected to examine the request in the coming hearings, along with the earlier plea already under review.
A day before this hearing, Justice Khan had already issued notices to the Punjab government on separate petitions. Those petitions challenge the detention of Noreen Niazi and Uzma Khan under the same MPO law used against Aleema.
The court did not accept the request to suspend the detention notifications for now. Instead, it asked the respondents to submit their replies, keeping the matter open for further hearings in the coming days.
As PTI’s long march date approaches, all eyes remain on how the Lahore High Court handles these detention cases. The outcome could shape the political temperature in the days leading up to September 27.
