AJK Minister clarifies Defamation Bill opened for debate
Islamabad: Azad Jammu and Kashmir’s Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Mian Abdul Waheed on Wednesday has assured journalists that the proposed defamation bill in the Legislative Assembly is not set in stone and open to feedback. Speaking to reporters at Jammu and Kashmir House Islamabad, he emphasized that there is no final decision and the bill is currently undergoing scrutiny by the Standing Committee.
Waheed stressed that the Pakistan People’s Party, part of the coalition government, values open dialogue and will thoroughly consider objections raised by journalist organizations. He pledged to consult media representatives and ensure the bill does not become a “black law” curbing press freedom.
“If there is no consensus on the bill in the House, it will be withdrawn,” the Minister declared. He further highlighted the importance of balancing information access with responsible reporting, advocating for parallel legislation guaranteeing the right to information.

On the legislative front, Waheed acknowledged the delay in forming committees within the assembly. He attributed this to the Speaker’s absence due to a foreign trip and assured that committees will be constituted soon.
The Minister’s statement offers a conciliatory tone and aims to dispel concerns surrounding the defamation bill. Journalist groups will likely scrutinize the details of the proposed legislation and engage in dialogue with the government to ensure responsible media practices while safeguarding freedom of expression.
