Ahsan Iqbal Backs Justice Yahya Afridi as Next Chief Justice of Pakistan
Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal has voiced his support for the appointment of Justice Yahya Afridi as the Chief Justice of Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of selecting a relatively less controversial figure during this critical period.
Ahsan Iqbal stated that the Supreme Court requires a Chief Justice who can foster unity and build a cohesive team within the institution.
In his remarks, Iqbal pointed out that Justice Afridi was chosen from a panel of three judges by a Parliamentary Committee, adhering to the established procedures for appointing Chief Justices in Pakistan.
He stressed that the principles of seniority and suitability have played a key role in judicial appointments over the past two decades, ensuring that qualified individuals are selected for significant positions.
Addressing concerns about possible polarization within the judiciary, Iqbal acknowledged that political polarization exists due to the multi-party system, but emphasized that the judiciary must remain an impartial body, unaffected by such divisions.
He also compared the appointment process in Pakistan with those in the U.S. and India, where elected officials play a more prominent role in judicial appointments and oversight.
Ahsan Iqbal’s comments underline the government’s reasoning for appointing Justice Yahya Afridi as the next Chief Justice.
