Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani Approves Six Key Amendment Bills

New Laws Extend Tenure for Service Chiefs, Increase Supreme Court Judge Seats Amid Heated NA Session

Islamabad-(Staff Reporter): Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani has given formal approval to six amendment bills, passed by both the National Assembly and Senate on Monday, addressing the tenure of service chiefs and the number of Supreme Court judges.

With Gilani’s signature, these amendments are now officially enacted as law.

Among the newly approved amendments are the Army Act Amendment Bill 2024, Air Force Act Amendment Bill 2024, and Pakistan Navy Act Amendment Bill 2024, which introduce changes to the service chiefs’ term length, extension period, and retirement age.

Additionally, Acting President Gilani signed the Supreme Court Practice and Procedure Amendment Bill 2024, which updates procedural guidelines for the Supreme Court, along with bills that increase the number of Supreme Court judges and expand the Islamabad High Court bench.

On Monday, the National Assembly and Senate approved these amendments to extend the service chiefs’ terms and increase Supreme Court judge seats, despite protests from opposition parties. Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani granted assent to all six bills passed by both houses of parliament to expand judicial and military leadership roles.

The National Assembly session, chaired by Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, saw rising tensions that led to physical clashes between members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and the ruling party.

As debates intensified, PTI members engaged in scuffles with government officials, creating a chaotic atmosphere that prompted intervention by the Sergeant-at-Arms.

Key politicians, including Federal Law Minister Atta Tarar and other Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) members, exchanged heated words with opposition representatives, necessitating repeated intervention by security personnel.

Following the confrontation, the National Assembly session was adjourned until 11 a.m.
