National Ice Hockey Championship included in GB Winter Festival

ISLAMABAD(M.Mudassar Iqbal)_The Gilgit-Baltistan Government’s Department of Tourism, Sports, and Culture is organizing the Seven Day Winter Festival from January 15.
This festival, spanning all ten districts, features various events, including the inaugural National Ice Hockey Championship, local sports, and cultural programs.

During a news conference in Islamabad on Sunday, Ghulam Mohammad, Minister of Tourism for Gilgit-Baltistan, Raja Naseer Ali Khan, Minister for Planning and Development, retired Commodore Shahid Nadim, Vice President of Pakistan Winter Sports, retired Captain Mushtaq Ahmed, Additional Chief Secretary, and Asifullah Khan, Secretary of Tourism, Sports, and Culture.

Minister Ghulam Mohammad emphasized the impact of winter sports on tourism in Gilgit-Baltistan, stating that these events aim to showcase the region’s beauty and provide diverse attractions for tourists throughout the year. The Seven Day Winter Festival is a testament to the region’s commitment to fostering tourism and sports.

The press conference, held at a local hotel in Islamabad, served as a promotion for the Gilgit-Baltistan Seven Day Winter Festival. Minister Ghulam Mohammad highlighted that the region is not only a summer destination but also a haven for tourists during the winter season. He encouraged tourists to explore the beautiful landscapes even in colder months through winter sports events.

Raja Naseer Ali Khan, emphasizing the government’s efforts to promote Gilgit-Baltistan, stated that they aim to organize various sports events throughout the year to attract global attention. He mentioned the success of the Shigar Skardu Festival and expressed the government’s commitment to enhancing future events.

Retired Commodore Shahid Nadim, a former national athlete, mentioned his longstanding connection with Gilgit-Baltistan and inaugurated the Ice Hockey Championship. He emphasized the potential of Gilgit-Baltistan to host major international events, including the Asian Games and the 2026 Olympics, showcasing Pakistan positively on the global stage.

Secretary Asifullah Khan, providing a ten-day briefing on the Winter Sports Festival, expressed the uniqueness of this edition. He urged locals to actively participate, reinforcing Gilgit-Baltistan’s commitment to the environment and showcasing the region’s potential as a global sports destination.
