Gilgit-Baltistan CM stresses improving social welfare services in remote areas
GILGIT,( Musaib Ahmad)_Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Haji Gulbar Khan, has emphasized the importance of improving social welfare services in remote and backward areas of the province. During a departmental briefing on Social Welfare, Population Welfare, Women Development, Youth Affairs, Human and Child Rights, Khan directed officials to focus on establishing vocational and welfare centers in all districts, particularly in underserved regions.
He highlighted the need to increase the number of family welfare centers in Shagar, Khurmang, Astor, and Diamer, citing the current centers’ underperformance due to staffing shortages and inefficiency. To address this, Khan ordered a three-month evaluation of 100 centers by a central supervisory committee and called for activating regional directorates of family welfare in Skardu and Diamer to strengthen remote area outreach.
Recruitment in relevant departments was another key area of focus. Khan instructed for immediate advertisement of vacancies and adherence to proper recruitment procedures. He also mentioned plans to adjust field mobilizer salaries in population welfare to match the government’s minimum wage, while emphasizing the need for performance improvement alongside increased pay.
To tackle potential ghost employees and ensure staff attendance, the Chief Minister directed the formation of a committee comprising a senior officer from women development and a doctor from the health department to monitor population welfare centers in Diamer. Additionally, he urged the development of a service structure for social welfare employees to enhance departmental efficiency.

Women’s development was another key concern. Khan called for extending the department’s administrative coverage to all three divisions and prioritizing the welfare of women in remote areas. He also underscored the importance of the Chief Minister Self-Employment Scheme, which provides interest-free loans for small business ventures. To maximize its reach, he instructed for opening scheme offices in remote areas and conducting awareness campaigns on the benefits of these loans.
